Our History

Colonisation is a whole history of massacres and robbery.

The Tervuren Museum alone detains more than 180 000 artifacts in Brussels, all of them taken from the Kingdom of Congo, while between 6 and 12 million people were killed by King Leopold’s colonial troops.

Egypt is probably the most famous example of this history of colonial robbery. In the context of Colonisation, France and UK in particular stole thousands of treasures from the pyramids.

The Louvre and the British Museum are full of artifacts, and even of mummies, regardless of the respect, we owe to the dead. Today, Egypt keeps asking for restitution of their artifacts, such as the bust of Nefertiti which is in Berlin.

Another famous example is the Benin Bronzes. They were looted in 1897 when a punitive British military expedition moved to crush the west African kingdom, which is today part of Nigeria.

Nigeria has reclaimed its legacy for decades.

It seems that today, UK might consider « lending » these treasures to Nigeria. This is of course unacceptable. The robber cannot « loan » the treasures to his victim.
